Biotechnology Information System network was established by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), New Delhi.

It was established to understand and utilize the spectacular developments in the field of genetic engineering, immunology, tissue culture, enzyme engineering and biochemical engineering.

Services:
Handling and management of biological data

Organization, access search and retrieval of biological information, documents and literature

Analysis and interpretation of the biological data through the computational approaches

Communications among people, project and institutions in the biological research

Functions:
To function as an information base in each specialty

To provide computer based information storage and retrieval system of data

To establish an active network

To provide retrieval science either on line or off line

To provide communication links between intra and inter research institutes

To develop software packages and databases

To conduct training courses to promote awareness on computer based storage and retrieval facility
