Re: BITS Pilani better than IIT

I find both Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani) and Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in India among the best institutes in India.

BITS Pilani

Birla Institute of Technology & Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani) is an Indian institute of higher education and a deemed university under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956.

It has 15 academic departments, and focuses primarily on undergraduate education in engineering and the sciences and on its management programme.

Ranking

Internationally, BITS Pilani was ranked 801-1000 in the QS World University Rankings of 2018. The same institute ranked it 178 in Asia and 101-110 among BRICS nations in 2016.

It was ranked 601-800 in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in 2016-2017, 181-190 in Asia and 196 among BRICS & Emerging Economies. Among all universities in India it was ranked 42 by Careers360 in 2017, 3rd among private institutes.

Among Engineering Colleges in India, BITS Pilani was ranked 16 in the 2017 National Institutional Ranking Framework in engineering category published by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

It ranked 4th by India Today in 2017 and 6th by Outlook India in 2016. Careers360 has given it the second best rating, AAAA+, among engineering colleges in 2017.

The Department of Management was ranked 16 among management schools in India by Outlook Indias Top 100 Management Schools of 2016.

Indian Institutes of Technology

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are autonomous public institutes of higher education, located in India. They are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance alongside National Institutes of Technology and lays down their powers, duties, and framework for governance etc.

Ranking

Nationwide, most IITs are ranked above any other engineering college in India in engineering education rankings. Outlook Indias Top Engineering Colleges of 2015 ranked seven IITs in its top 10, including the top six positions

Worldwide however, the highest ranked IIT (IIT Delhi) is ranked at 179 in the QS World University Rankings of 2015, while only 4 other IITs (IIT Bombay at 202, IIT Madras at 254, IIT Kanpur at 271 and IIT Kharagpur at 286) make the top 300.

In the 2017 QS World Rankings by Subject - IIT (ISM) Dhanbad featured at 24th followed by IIT Kharagpur at 35th position in the Engineering- Mining and Mineral science.

IIT Delhi secures 49th place for Electrical Engineering in the same ranking. The only Institute that was listed in the top 400 by Times Higher Education rankings was IIT Bombay in the 351-400 category.

The Times Asia Rankings 2016 allotted IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee at 43rd, 51st, 60th, 62nd and 65th respectively.

This was really surprising as a newer IIT, namely IIT Indore was ranked 8th in the world followed by IIT Kanpur (which was ranked 9th) under a ranking released by Hackerrank for the world's best coders.
