The Bengal Engineering College was established in 1856. The University is the second oldest and one of the premier engineering institutions in India.

The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs in 9 engineering disciplines and 4 non-engineering disciplines.

All academic and administrative departments are connected by a LAN with fiber-optic cables donated by the Alumni Association of USA/Canada.

The alumni of the college have occupied or are occupying top positions in various national and international organisations.
