Commonwealth Shared Scholarships are a combined initiative between the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (with funding from DFID) and UK universities. It is made to support scholarships for students from developing Commonwealth countries who would not otherwise be able to study in the UK. Shared Scholarships are offered on an annual basis for Master’s study only.

Eligibility
Candidate must be

•be nationals of a developing Commonwealth country, and not currently be living or studying in a developed country
•has a first degree at either first or upper second class level
•be sufficiently fluent in English to pursue the course
•have not previously studied for one year or more in a developed country
•be able to confirm in writing that neither they nor their families would otherwise be able to pay for the proposed course of study
•be willing to confirm that they will return to their home country as soon as their period of study is complete

Number of awards per year:
150-200 per year

Funding applies to:
International (non-EU) applicants

Funding notes:
Commonwealth countries only

Funding duration:
up to 2 years

What financial support does the Scheme offer?
This includes:
all your academic fees
a books and equipment allowance
travel costs to and from the UK
approved travel for your study
a personal allowance.

These scholarships are funded by the UK Department for International Development with the aim of contributing to the UK’s international development aims and wider overseas interests, supporting excellence in UK higher education, and sustaining the principles of the Commonwealth.

Eligibility:

To apply for these scholarships, you must:

By August 2016, hold a first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) honours standard

Not have studied or worked for one (academic) year or more in a developed country

Be unable, either yourself or through your family, to pay to study in the UK

Be a Commonwealth citizen, refugee, or British protected person

Be permanently resident in a developing Commonwealth country

Be available to start your academic studies in the UK by the start of the UK academic year in September/October 2016


Selection process:

Universities must put forward their selected candidates to the CSC by 29 April 2016.

The CSC will then confirm that these candidates meet the eligibility criteria for this scheme.

Universities will inform candidates of their results by July 2016.
