Re: Advantages of IRDA

The Infrared Data Association (IrDA) defines physical specifications communications protocol standards for the short range exchange of data over infrared light, for uses such as personal area networks (PANs).

IrDA is a very short-range example of free-space optical communication.

IrDA interfaces are used in palmtop computers and mobile phones.

IrDA specifications include
IrPHY,
IrLAP,
IrLMP,
IrCOMM,
Tiny TP,
IrOBEX,
and IrLAN.

IrDA has now produced another standard, IrFM, for Infrared financial messaging (i.e., for making payments) also known as "Point & Pay".

For the devices to communicate via IrDA they must have a direct line of sight.

Advantages of IrDA :

1.Influencing the future of the mobile computing and consumer electronics industries by actively working on setting strategies and creating standards.

2.Establishing valuable contacts within other dynamic IrDA member companies that are working on standards today.

3.Joining an internationally recognized effort by the electronics industry and participating with our international member companies that are active in the IrDA standards process.

4.Joining IrDA's marketing and promotional programs designed to create visibility and recognition of the IrDA logo.

5.A cost effective way to promote your corporation in literature, press releases, worldwide web pages, trade shows and videos.

Disadvantage of IrDA:

-One technological disadvantage is that IR uses a line-of-sight transmission. Thus, it is sensitive to atmospheric conditions and bad weather, particularly fog.

-It requires both transmitter and receiver to be in line of sight.

-Devices can not move around while transmission is in progress.

-Used for very short distance applications.
