The University was organized in the Model of London University. The Publics Petition dated Nov11th 1839 started the establishment of Madras University. This was with Mr. George Norton as its President; The University Board was constituted in Jan.1840. After a lapse of 14 years In 1854 Government of India developed a systematic educational policy for country and as a sequel to this on Sep 5th, 1857 by an act of legislative council of India the University was established.
