Nehru Trophy Boat Race Kerala
Nehru Trophy Boat Race is a democratic Vallam Kali controlled in the Punnamada Lake near Alappuzha, Kerala, India. Vallam Kali or Vallamkali literally means boat play/game, but can be understood to boat race in English. The most democratic event of the race is the competition of Chundan Vallams (Snake Boats). Thus the race is also known as Snake Boat Race in English.
Nadubhagom Chundan’ in incredible speed spanned the finishing point and raised the winner, flag on the boat. The then District Collector Kerala Varma declared the results of the race over the microphone. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race can justly be called “Kuttanad’s Olympics on water”, the national festival of the people of Kuttanad. This is maintained every year on the 2nd Saturday of August, at the palm-fringed, picturesque Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha, Kerala, etc.
