The Gauhati University which is located in Jalukbari, Guwahati, is the first, oldest and renowned University in the entire North East India. It was established in 1948. It is a teaching-cum-affiliating university.

There are approx 326 Colleges/Institutes which comes under it, which are mostly located in the districts of lower Assam.

Its campus has a hillock on the southern side and the mighty river Brahmaputra is flowing on the northern side. Its area is developed into a small township, known as 'Gopinath Bardoloi Nagar'. It has about 5000 population including 3000 students residing in the hostels.
