What Are The Stages Of Ias Exam

I have completed my graduation now I am preparing for IAS examination. So I want to know some basic information about IAS examination like stages of examination, syllabus detail, name of posts. Can you provide me these information’s?

The Indian Civil Services examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) every year. The examination schedule is announced during January - February after which the selection is done in 3 stages. Candidates are filtered at every stage through a process of elimination

UPSC IAS Exam Pattern

1st Stage: UPSC IAS Prelims – Objective Type (Qualifier)
2nd Stage: UPSC IAS Mains – Written Test
3rd Stage: UPSC IAS Interview / Personality Test

(Stage I)

Here is the exam pattern for UPSC IAS Prelims or Stage 1:
Type of Questions Objective Type or MCQs
Negative Marking Yes – 1/3rd of marks will be deducted for every wrong answer
Nature of Exam Qualifying in Nature
Minimum Qualifying marks required 33 percent
Language of Paper English and Hindi


Name of the Paper Duration Questions
Paper-I: General Studies 2 hours 100
Paper-II: General Studies (CSAT) 2 hours 80



Name of the Paper Marks Allotted Type of Questions
Paper-I: General Studies 200 Objective type
Paper-II: General Studies (CSAT) 200 Objective type
