Re: What Should I Take In University To Become A Police Officer

A police officer is a meaningful and impactful way to serve a community. Becoming a police officer doesn’t rely heavily on formal education; in fact, a high school diploma is often the minimum formal education required. An associate’s, bachelor’s or graduate degree is rarely mandatory. Instead, extensive and specialized training is required.

Getting police officer jobs is becoming more and more competitive.

Get a 4 year degree if you can. Get the highest grade point average that you can. Having a degree can help you get hired
. Having a degree can also help you get promoted during your career.
Choose a major that interests you and that could also be useful for police work.

There are many good majors for police officers or people that want to become police officers.
Accounting, communications, computer science, a foreign language, law, or psychology are some examples.

Areas of Study

Most aspiring police officers pursue degrees in criminal justice. In criminal justice degree programs, students learn about every aspect of the law and justice system.

Criminal justice is an interdisciplinary field that incorporates the study of law, psychology, sociology, public administration, and more.

Other relevant majors that students thinking of joining the police force may pursue include police science and political science. Most police departments prefer applicants with a degree, regardless of their major.
