Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) is a private deemed university institute located in the outskirts of Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India.

It was founded in 1984, as Vellore Engineering College by G. Viswanathan.

The foundation stone for VIT Bhopal campus at Sehore, Madhya Pradesh was laid down by Shivraj Singh Chouhan (Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh) on 20 October 2016.

It was established under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act, 1956.

The Union Ministry of Human Resources Development conferred University status on Vellore Engineering College in 2001.

VIT is headed by its founder and Chancellor, Dr. G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the Tamil Nadu Government.

NAAC has re-accredited VIT with an 'A' grade.

VIT has been accredited by TCS, Wipro and Cognizant for academic collaboration and placements.
