Re: UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Exam Eligibility Conditions

The UPSC examination is using a two-step method. Applicants needs to appear for the civil services preliminary exam which is followed by the civil services mains exam.

The preliminary examination is an objective type exam taken as a screening test for the mains exam

Eligibility Criteria:
Applicants require a graduation degree or equivalent from a recognized university to qualify for the application process. The age limit for the candidates from the general category is 21-30 years, OBC category is 21-33 years and SC/ST category is 21-35 years.
The number of attempts available to pass the exam for general, OBC and SC/ST category are 4, 7 and 11 respectively.

Preliminary Paper I Syllabus
Current events of national and international importance.
History of India and Indian National Movement.
Economic and Social Development Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization.
General Science.

IAS Preliminary Paper II Syllabus
Comprehension
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision-making and problem-solving
Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)
General mental ability
English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).
