The Distance Education program of D.E.I. was launched in 2004,
The initiation of the Distance Education Program was marked in 2004 by the launch of a Certificate Program on Motor Vehicle Mechanic at Mela thiru venkatanatha puram (MTV Puram), a remote village in Tamil Nadu with rampant unemployment and economic backwardness.

The Distance Education Council (IGNOU) had given approval for the Distance Education Program of DEI and recognition accorded to the Institute by the DEC on the recommendation of the Joint Committee of UGC-AICTE-DEC for a period of three academic years with effect from academic year 2009-10.
