Re: UCIL Bhopal Gas Tragedy
Bhopal Gas Tragedy is also known as Bhopal disaster. It is considered one of the worst industrial calamities in the world. The incident took place on 2–3 December, 1984 at the Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) at night. The UCIL was a pesticide plant located in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Approx 3,787 people died because of the mishap. A leak of methyl isocyanate gas was the cause of the incident. The toxic substance made its way in and around the shantytowns situated near the UCIL. Negligence of 7 ex-employees and the former chairman of UCIL was the reason of this incident and in June 2010 these all people were sentenced to two years of imprisonment and a fine of about $2,000 each. |
