Test of Written English (TWE) is a subtest of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) exam to measure the ability of EFL/ESL students to produce an organized essay or report.

You will write an essay on a given topic for 30 minutes.

The scale for the TWE score is 1 to 6 (1=lowest and 6=highest).

You will be asked to write either an opinion or argumentative essay.

The test is offered only five times a year with the TOEFL test in August, October, December, February, and May.

Your TWE test score is reported separately.

Your score will be based on the following criteria.

Organization -- Do the ideas follow each other logically?

Development -- Are the ideas supported by adequate and relevant examples, reasons, facts, and so forth?

Language usage -- Are the sentences free of grammatical errors? Do they have varied sentence structures and vocabulary?

You have only 30 minutes to write your essay. Use this time wisely.

Spend 3 to 5 minutes for the outline.
Spend 17-20 minutes for the developmental paragraphs.
Spend 3 to 5 minutes for proofreading.
