The M. Phil Programme in Social Sciences with specialisation in Sociology of Education is a taught full-time two year degree programme offered by Tata Institute of Social Sciences. The students are expected to complete their course work during the first and the second semesters and complete their dissertation during the third and the fourth semesters. The Programme carries a total of 46 credits and is divided into three components- Compulsory Courses, Optional Course and Dissertation. A. Compulsory Courses (14 Credits) The compulsory courses will consist of courses on Sociology of Education (6 credits) and courses on Research Methodology in the Social Sciences (8 credits). B. Optional Course/s (2 credits) At present, the Centre will not offer any optional courses in this programme. Following the Institute norm students will choose one optional course of 2 credits from the list of optional courses available to them from the other M. Phil programmes of the Institute. However, the Centre faculty may consider offering optional courses in future. C. Dissertation (30 credits) During the third and the fourth semesters, students will prepare a dissertation based on primary and/or secondary data under the supervision of a faculty. They will develop and present a research proposal, gather and analyse data, and submit a thesis of 100-150 pages.
