Re: South Asia Institute Heidelberg University Germany

The Bachelor of Arts course in South Asian Studies is an interdisciplinary, practical course at the South Asia Institute aims to convey practical, philological, cultural and social science content.

The intensive language offer in the BA South Asian Studies includes: Bengali, Hindi, Classical Tibetan, Sanskrit, Tamil, Tibetan colloquial, and Urdu. In addition, it also offers language courses in Dari, Nepali, Pali and Sinhala every semester.

The specialist knowledge imparted in the BA South Asian Studies is supplemented by the acquisition of interdisciplinary skills tailored specifically to South Asia. A special feature of the Program is the mobility window, which enables major students to test the theoretical knowledge on site in practice.

Admission regulations for the Bachelor South Asian Studies

The start of studies is always in the winter semester. The Course is offered as a major in 100% and 75%, as a first or second major in a 50% / 50% combination and as a minor in a 25% variant.

The standard period of study in the main subject is 6 semesters, in which 180 credit points must be earned. The orientation test accompanies the course and must be taken after 2nd semester, at the latest after the 3rd semester.

At the beginning of the winter semester (usually in the week before the start of lectures) the SAI introductory semester days take place, in which all departments of the institute introduce themselves. A breakfast organized by the student council also offers the opportunity to meet future fellow students.

BA South Asian Studies Course

The study in the South Asian course is multidisciplinary. The diverse range of subjects at the institute allows to specialize individually or to set up a wide range according to own interests and ideas. The regional focus on South Asia is always preserved as a framework.

There are 3 types of modules: compulsory modules, compulsory elective modules and elective modules. The introductory course at the beginning of studies and the final exam at the end of studies are the two compulsory modules.

In the compulsory elective area, one chooses one of the many languages offered in South Asia and events in the field of general, job-oriented skills. Most of studies include the elective modules. One can freely select and compile modules from the subjects offered at the institute.
