Shivaji University established in 1962. Kolhapur, Sangli, and Satara come under its jurisdiction with 279 affiliated colleges and recognised institutes. It imparts education in 10 major faculties of Arts, Social Science, Science, Commerce, Education, Fine Arts, Law, Medicine, Ayurvedic Medicine, Engineering and Technology.

Shivaji University has been re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council, (NAAC) with "A" Grade (CGPA-3.16) (2014). It is among top 50 Universities contributing towards research in India in 2015. It is ranked 44th among all Universities in India.
