1. If a = 5 + 2 √6, the value of √a - 1/√a is —

(A) 2 √2 (Ans)

(B) 2 √3

(C) 3 - √2

(D) 1 + √5

Explanation : a = 5 + 2 √6

= (√3)2 + 2 (√3) * (√2) + (√2)2

= (√3 + √2)2

∴ √a = √3 + √2

∴ √a - 1/√a = (√3 + √2) - (1/√3 + √2)

= (√3 + √2)2 - 1 / (√3 + √2) = 5 + 2 √6 - 1 / √3 + √2

= 4 + 2 √6 / √3 + √2 = 2 √2 (√2 + √3) / √3 + √2

= 2 √2

2. Simplify —

√[(12.1)2 - (8.1)2 ÷ [(0.25)2 + (0.25) (19.95)]

(A) 1

(B) 2

(C) 3

(D) 4 (Ans)

Explanation : √[(12.1)2 - (8.1)2 ÷ [(0.25)2 + (0.25) (19.95)]

= √[(12.1 + 8.1) (12.1 - 8.1)] ÷ [0.25 (0.25 + 19.95)]

= √(20.2 * 4) ÷ (0.25 * 20.2)

= √20.2 * 4 / 0.25 * 20.2 = √16 = 4

Explanation : a + 1/a - 2 = (√a - 1/√a)2 = positive

∴ a + 1/a > 2
