Re: The Role of Food Corporation of India in Making India Food Secure

The Food Corporation of India was setup under the Food Corporation's Act 1964 , in order to fulfill following objectives of the Food Policy:

-Effective price support operations for safeguarding the interests of the farmers.

-Distribution of foodgrains throughout the country for public distribution system.

-Maintaining satisfactory level of operational and buffer stocks of foodgrains to ensure National Food Security


Role of FCI:

-Effective price support operations for safeguarding farmers interest.

- Distributes food grains throughout the country through PDS.

- Maintaining operational. And buffer stock of food grains ensuring national food security.


It does its role through implementing following functions

1. Procurement

2. Storage

3. Preservation

4. Transportation

5. Distribution


Suggested reforms:

- The coverage of TPDS and food security should be restricted to BPL families. The APL families with purchasing power must be ensured with stable prize interest the market.

-Rations cards must not be used for identification cards for various purposes because some people will enroll to get a mere identification Id.

-Issuing food stamps and food credit cards and their by controlling corruption.


-Decentralization of operations.

-Promoting private trade in food grains.

-popularizing Grain Bank Scheme

-Private sector to maintain buffer stock that brings in efficiency by utilizing technology.

-Sugar supplies through pda draws well to do families to the system so Alternate Avenue of marketing it needs to be explored.
