Re: Requirements for Private Students for UGC NET Exam

No, there is no restriction on private students for taking the UGC NET exam but you need to keep in mind that the Post Graduation must be from a university which is affiliated from the UGC.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who have completed or are pursuing a UGC specified Master’s degree in the following are only eligibile:

MOL ( Master of Oriental Learning)
MPEd. ( Master of Physical Education)
MSW ( Master of Social Work)
M.Sc. ( Master of Science)
M.Stat. ( Master of Statistics)
M.Tech. ( Master of Technology)
M.Text ( Master of Textiles) Parangat
Shikshan Parangat
MA ( Master of Arts)
MCA ( Master of Computer Applications)
MFA ( Master of Fine Arts)
MJ ( Master of Journalism)
MLIS ( Master of Library & Information Science)

Candidates who have secured at least 55% marks in Master Degree or equivalent exam from University or Institute recognized by UGC in Humanities and Social Sciences, Computer Science & Applications, Electronic Science etc. are eligible.

The Scheduled Caste/ Scheduled Tribe/ Physically Handicapped/ Visually Handicapped category candidates who have scored minimum 50% marks in Master degree exam are eligible.

Candidates who have appeared or will be appearing at Master Degree (final year) exam and whose result is still awaited or candidates whose qualifying exams have been delayed may also apply for the exam.

Such applicants need complete the P.G. degree exam within 1 year from the date of NET with required percentage of marks, failing which will be treated as disqualified.

Age Limit & Relaxation

Junior Research Fellowship:
Maximum 28 years as on 1st June of the year of admission. A relaxation up to 5 years for candidates belonging to SC/ ST/ OBC/ PH/ VH categories and to women applicants.

Relaxation is also given to the candidates having research experience, limited to the period spent on research in the relevant/related subject of post-graduation degree, subject to a maximum of 5 years, on production of a certificate from appropriate authority.

3 years relaxation in age is permissible to the candidates possessing L.L.M. Degree. Total age relaxation on the above ground(s) shall not exceed 5 years under any circumstances.
