Re: Range Of GRE Scores

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test comprises the verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing. The total test duration is 3 hours 45 minutes.

The GRE test scores that are reported include:

a. The verbal reasoning score. This can range from 130-170 in one-point increment.

b The quantitative reasoning score. This can range from 130-170 in one-point increment.

c. The analytical writing score. This can range from 0-6 in half-point increment.

The GRE score report also gives you the percentile rank for each of the above test scores.

BEST SCORES

These scores will put one in the top 10% of all test takers
VERBAL: 163 – 170
QUANTITATIVE: 165-170
WRITING: 5.0 – 6.0

BETTER SCORES

These scores will put one in a highly competitive place in admissions (top 25% of all test takers)
VERBAL: 158 – 162
QUANTITATIVE: 159-164
WRITING: 4.5

GOOD SCORES

These scores put one ahead of the pack (50%+), but won’t be as advantageous when applying to highly competitive programs
VERBAL: 152-158
QUANTITATIVE: 153-158
WRITING: 4.0

BELOW AVERAGE SCORES
These scores may be enough to get into a wide variety of graduate programs, but will be below average compared to the testing population
VERBAL: 151 or below
QUANTITATIVE: 152 or below
WRITING: 3.5 or below

Many factors affect graduate school or business school application, and each will help decide whether one is admitted or rejected. GRE score is just one part of candidacy. Undergraduate GPA, letters of recommendation, research, and personal essays will all contribute to acceptance into a School.
