Ranchi University was set up on july12, 1960, with ten post graduate divisions, one constituent school (Ranchi College, Ranchi), and 20 subsidiary school spread over a zone of 65,000 square kilometer.

The University has 23 post graduate divisions, 15 constituent schools, and 49 subsidiary universities, granting instructing in prescription, psychiatry, law, designing, business administration, training, and general courses. Other than these organizations there is UGC supported Academic Staff College.

The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has picked the University branch of Geology under its FIST program.

Alongside normal courses, Ranchi University additionally offers post graduate level Self Financing/Vocational courses nemly L.L.M., M.B.A., M.C.A., M.Sc in Electronics and Communication, P.G Diploma in Medicinal Plant and P.G. Recognition in Plant Bio-Technology.

At the under graduate level the University offers B.Ed., Bio-innovation, Computer Application, Computer Maintenance, Information Technology, Office Management and Secretarial Practice, Functional Hindi, Functional English, Clinical Nutrition and Dietics, Fashion Designing, Food Processing, Environment and Water Management, Business Administration, Travel and Tourism Management, Mass Communication and Video Production, Advertising and Sales Promotion& Sales Management.
