For applying for Merchant Navy candidate should completing 10+2 system or equivalent, having passed Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics as elective subjects and for graduate candidate graduation should be in BE (Marine) ,B.Sc. (Nautical Science) etc…So , you are not eligible for join Merchant Navy after B.Com .

I am afraid to say but one with B Com degree in hand cannot join Merchant Navy. Only the Science stream students are eligible for job in Merchant Navy.


The Merchant Navy is the collective name for the commercial shipping industry. However, it is actually composed of individual companies who are responsible for their own recruitment and training.


The officers are employed on the many types of vessels that make up the commercial shipping industry. These include ferries; cruise ships; cargo container ships; oil, gas and chemical tankers, and other bulk cargo carriers; and a wide range of vessels designed for specialised supply, support, and rescue roles.


The officers are primarily leaders and managers. However, as well as managing staff, senior officers are still expected to perform practical tasks with their colleagues.


Educational Qualification (to join Merchant Navy):

1. Pass in 10+2 exam from a recognized Board / University with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), with minimum 60% aggregate marks in PCM.

OR

B.Sc. in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with Physics as individual subject in one of the year, with an average of minimum 50% of marks in the final year of B.Sc., from a recognized University provided that one must have passed 10+2 exam with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) from a recognised Board.

OR

B.E./B. Tech. or its equivalent degree from I.I.T. or from a college recognized by AICTE/UGC.


2. One should have passed with not less than 50% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th or 12th standard or in the Degree program conducted by a recognized Board/ University.


Age Limit:
One should not be more than 25 years and less than 17 years as on the commencement of course.
The age limit is relaxable by 2 years in case of female candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.


Physical and Medical Standards:
Medically fit as per the standards set by Merchant Shipping Medical Examination Rules, 2000 as amended from time to time.


Eye-Sight:
One must have 6/6 in each eye without visual aids - Normal colour vision.
One will have to undergo a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) before being finally selected for the programme.
