IPS (Indian Police Services) Officer is most coveted position in civil administration of the Indian Democratic setup. Eligibility to be an IPS Officer: Educational Qualification: The candidate must possess a degree from an Indian University or an equivalent qualification. Those in the final year of a degree course can also appear in the Preliminary Examination taken every year by UPSC. Age Limit: The candidate must have attained the age of 21 years on 1st August of the year of examination and must not have attained 30 years of age on that date. Age Relaxation: The upper age limit will be relaxed by 3 years for OBC candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates. The upper age limit is also relaxed in favor of Defense Services Personnel. Nationality: 1. For IPS, the candidate must be a citizen of India. 2. For other services, a candidate must be either: a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal, or a subject of Bhutan, or a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India. Procedure to become an IPS Officer: Step 1: Take “Application Form” along with “Information Brochure” from any of the “Head Post Offices or Post Offices” spread throughout the country and sent the filled Application form to: The Secretary Union Public Service Commission Dholpur House New Delhi - 110011 Step 2: In the month of May or June the aspirants have to take the “Preliminary Exam” consisting of two papers. Paper1: • Current events of national and international importance • History of India and Indian national movement • Indian and World Geography- physical, social, economic geography of India and the world • Indian Polity and governance – constitution, political system, panchayati raj, public policy, Rights issues, etc. • Economic and social development – sustainable development, poverty, inclusion, demographics, social sector initiatives etc • General issues on environmental ecology, bio-diversity and climate change-that do not require subject specialization • General science Paper 2: • Comprehension • Interpersonal skills including communication skills • Logical reasoning and analytical ability • Decision making and problem solving • General mental ability • Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc. (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. –Class X level) • English language comprehension skills (Class X level) Optional subject for the second paper: 1 Agriculture 2 Animal Husbandry and veterinary science 3 Botany 4 Chemistry 5 Civil Engineering 6 Commerce 7 Economics 8 Electrical Engineering 9 Geography 10 Geology 11 Indian History 12 Law 13 Mathematics 14 Mechanical Engineering 15 Philosophy 16 Physics 17 Political Science 18 Psychology 19 Public Administration 20 Sociology 21 Statistics 22 Zoology Step 3: Those candidates who are declared qualified in the “Preliminary examination” are supposed to take the final exam held in the month of October. Papers: 1 Essay type Indian Language Qualifying Paper Marks: 300 1 English Qualifying Paper Marks: 300 1 General Essay Type Paper Marks: 200 2 General Studies Papers Marks: 300 4 Optional Subjects Papers Marks: 300 Step 4: Once you are through, the final stage is the interview. The aspirants are called for interview to test their personality and mental ability. To become an IPS officer applicants have to appear in Indian Police Service Exam held every year under the supervision of Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Eligibility:- Applicants must hold a degree of any of Universities in any discipline . Age Limit:- Applicants must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 32 years. Age Relaxation:- (i) 5 years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe. (ii) 3 years in the case of applicants belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates. Paper Pattern Preliminary Examination:- (i) Both the question papers will be of the objective type (ii) The question papers will be set both in Hindi and English. The Examination shall comprise of two compulsory papers of 200 marks each.
