IAS is commonly known as Indian Administrative Services.
To become an IAs officer you need to clear UPSC Civil Services Examination, this examination is conducted by UPSC.

Every year in two stages:

Preliminary Examination and
Main Examination

If your graduation is complete then you are eligible to apply for IAS exam, final year appearing candidates are also eligible for this examination.

Your age should between 21 to 30 years age.

Firstly you have to apply for the Preliminary examination, there are two papers in this examination and both are objective one.
If you have pass the preliminary examination, then you are eligible for Main examination.

Main examination is Descriptive and you have to choose the optional subject in Main examination.

Number of attempts:


4 in case of general
7 in case of OBC &
unlimited in case of SC/ST till they attain the age of 35 years

To become IAS officer you have to clear IAS exam after graduation. Indian Administrative Services Exam (IAS) exam is conducted by central body Union Public Service Commission every year in the month of May to selected candidates for Central Government and its various departments.

IAS exam eligibility criteria-

Graduate in any discipline from a recognised university.

Candidates having professional and technical qualifications recognised by the government are also eligible.

Candidates who have passed the final year of MBBS or any Medical degree Examination but are yet to complete the internship can also appear for the Main Examination.

Age Limits:

Candidates age must be between 21 years to 30 years.

The upper age limit may be relaxed in respect of the SC/ST and other backward classes.

Nationality:

For the Indian Administrative Service and the Indian Police Service, a candidate must be a citizen of India
For other services, a candidate must be either:

A citizen of India, or
A subject of Nepal, or
A subject of Bhutan, or
A Tibetan refugee who came over to India with the intention of permanently settling in India. or
A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Srilanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Provided that a candidate belonging to categories (ii), (iii), (iv) and (v) shall be a person in whose favour a certificate of eligibility has been issued by the Government of India. These candidates will not be eligible for appointment to the Indian Foreign Service.

IAS Syllabus

Preliminary Examination (CSP)

Paper I – (200 marks) Duration: Two hours

• Current events of national and international importance

• History of India and Indian National Movement

• Indian and World Geography – Physical, Social, Economic geography of India and the World.

• Indian Polity and Governance – Constitution, Political System,

Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.

• Economic and Social Development – Sustainable Development,

Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector Initiatives, etc.

• General issues on Environmental ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate

Change – that do not require subject specialization

• General Science.

Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours

• Comprehension

• Interpersonal skills including communication skills;

• Logical reasoning and analytical ability

• Decision making and problem solving

• General mental ability

• Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. -Class X level)

• English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).

• Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level

• The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type.

Main Examination
Main examination has two optional subjects (two papers each carries 300 marks), one General Studies (two papers each carries 300 marks), one essay (carries 200 marks) – total 2000 marks.

Optional Subjects for the Main Examination:Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science, Botany, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Commerce and Accountancy, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Geography, Geology, History, Law, Management, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Science, Philosophy, Physics, Political Science and International Relations, Psychology, Public Administration, Sociology, Statistics, Zoology. Each paper is of 3 hours duration.
