I. Basic Principles of Medicinal Chemistry
A. History and development of medicinal chemistry.
B. Physicochemical properties in relation to biological action:
Ionization, Drug distribution and pKa values, hydrogen bonding, protein binding, chelation,
isosterism, optical and geometrical isomerism, steric effect, redox potential and surface activity.
Types of receptors, drug-receptor interaction including signal transduction mechanism.
Drug metabolism: General pathways of drug metabolism (different types of reaction in phase-I and phase-II with examples), factors affecting drug metabolism including stereo chemical aspects, significance of drug metabolism in medicinal chemistry.
Drug latentiation and Prodrugs: Basic concepts and application of prodrug design.
Study of classification, mechanism of action (biochemical and molecular basis), structure activity relationship including stereo chemical aspects, physiochemical properties and synthesis of selected drugs (only drugs marked with asterisk) on the following categories of drugs.
