Career Requirements Degree Level Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O) Degree Field Medicine Licensure Mandatory; must pass the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) or the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX-USA) Certification Voluntary certification is available through American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) Experience Experience is gained through residency and fellowship programs Key Skills Excellent communicator, detail-oriented, empathetic, patient, well-organized, good general computer skills, as well as knowledge of healthcare-specific applications and hardware Training for Pediatric Hematologists/Oncologists Pediatric hematologists/oncologists are medical doctors who have had At least 4 years of medical school Three years of residency training in pediatrics At least 3 additional years of fellowship training in pediatric hematology/oncology Certification from the American Board of Pediatrics Types of Treatments of Pediatric Hematologists/Oncologists Pediatric hematologists/oncologists diagnose, treat, and manage children and teens with the following: Cancers including leukemias, lymphomas, brain tumors, bone tumors, and solid tumors Diseases of blood cells including disorders of white cells, red cells, and platelets Bleeding disorders |
