Re: Pacific University Anthropology
In the anthropology program at Pacific University, one study current societies throughout the world, paying particular attention to the concept of culture in a curriculum that stresses overseas study and fieldwork experiences. One learns the basic scientific methods of the discipline, both quantitative and qualitative and gain real-world experience with fieldwork and study abroad opportunities. The central concept in anthropology courses is culture, which refers to primarily symbolic systems as well as material culture. Comparative religions, world music, culinary practices, myth and ritual are among the many subjects offered, along with opportunities to combine service learning, fieldwork and independent study. The Anthropology-Sociology major is offered through the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Also offered through this department is a major in Sociology. Minors are available in Sociology, Anthropology and Comparative Religion. The major in Anthropology-Sociology recognizes that both fields share a common philosophical and theoretical history. Both share a concern for the social and cultural conditions of human life. The fundamental aims of the major in Anthropology-Sociology are to provide students with the analytical perspectives for the systematic understanding of human social and cultural existence and to prepare students for graduate education and professional employment in which cultural diversity and cross-cultural understanding is essential.
