The full form for NIPER is National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research. It’s the national level institutes in pharmaceutical sciences with a make known objective of becoming a centre of excellence for advanced studies and research in pharmaceutical sciences.

The Government of India has declared it as an 'Institute of National Importance'. It is an autonomous body set up under the aegis of Department of Pharmaceuticals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, India.

It functions under the Union ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers. Its policy architecture is framed and reviewed by a board of governors which includes renowned academicians, members of the parliament and entrepreneurs. It is represented by a director, who is also the chief academic and executive officer.

Its Branches offer a 2 year PG degree course; MS (Pharm.) in 13 disciplines
(Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Clinical Research, Pharmacy Practice, Natural products, Biotechnology, Pharmacoinformatics, Traditional medicine and Pharmaceutics) and MBA (Pharm.), etc.
