Re: ICMR Aims

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research

It is one of the oldest and largest medical research bodies in the world.

The ICMR is funded by the Government of India through the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

ICMR Aims and Objectives

The main strategy was to impart simple psychosocial skills like coping skills and problem solving skills to the women.

Generally, the intervention developed for improving the status and quality of life of the risk families, were aimed to be simple and understandable by the families.

To achieve better and long term impact of the scheme, it was aimed to carry out the programme through the Anganwadi workers, who have a close contact with the.
families and also oce involved in similar activities.

This programme was planned so as not to be time consuming or as being a different scheme altogether.

The main intention was to incorporate the present programme into the existing schemes, by training the Anganwadi workers and imparting them certain psychosocial skills to facilitate their work.

The intervention was basically sensitization of the family to risk factors, talking to the family members, advising them, giving suggestions that suit them and encouraging them as they make these new changes.

The specific aims of the intervention programme were as follows:

Training of the anganwadi workers to-

a) identify families at risk for poor psychosocial development of children.

b) carry out the family intervention with these families.

To study the impact of i!ltervention on cognitive and nutritional development of the children 'at risk'.

To study the effect of intervention on subjective well being of the mothers.
