The Situational Judgement Test (SJT) was a different exam to what they as final medical students were used to sitting at medical school.

It is a unique test that highlights a distinctive set of clinical and judgement skills in certain scenarios which, as a foundation trainee, became much more apparent.

It is not the black and white knowledge that they are accustomed to, yet with several tips, it may be a simple exam that you can be more comfortable at sitting!

SJT Preparation Tips-

Do the practice paper online as if you are sitting the actual test.

Know the structure of the test and of the number of questions within it.

Set yourself clear timing targets to which you can pace yourself in the actual test

Read the marking scheme and check why they have opted for the order of answers.

Read the GMC guidance on good medical practice. Use it as guide to answer your questions.

The answers are there to give you a rough guide on how to tackle certain scenarios or situations in clinical practice. However, it is important to note that subtle changes in the question may entirely change the order of the answers.

It may be useful to attend one of the many preparatory courses. However, if you opt to do that, check the ratings and previous feedback from trainees on the usefulness of the course.

Ask the foundation trainees and senior clinicians about how they would tackle certain scenarios.

Remember that patient safety is always your number one priority.

Stay calm and sleep well the night before.

Weighting-

As students can score 0-50 points on the SJT, it carries far more weight on foundation programme applications than academic performance, because the educational performance measure is done on a 34-50 point scale.

For example, a student in the lowest decile in his or her medical school cohort, with no additional achievements, scores 34 points, and a student in the top decile with a PhD, a publication, and a national prize or presentation scores 50 points.

Thus the educational performance measure is effectively a 16 point scale, compared with the 50 point SJT scale (where a zero score is feasible).

This makes the SJT about three times more valuable than the totality of all academic achievements.
