Newcastle University is a public research university located in Newcastle upon Tyne in the North-East of England. The university was established in 1834.

Student Selected Components (SSCs)

Student Selected Components (SSCs) are a strand which runs throughout the curriculum and provides you with the opportunity to study topics of your own choosing.

In 4th year an 18-week period allows you to choose a separate topic for each of the three six-week blocks.

It is a unique part of the curriculum, and provides a real opportunity for you to have individual choice in what you study.

This is a particularly popular aspect of the curriculum which their students rate very highly.

The SSC periods last for a total of 21 weeks (18 weeks of study, comprising three 6-week SSC periods, and three weeks of assessment).

Examples of SSCs available are:

Care of newborn babies
Medical Law
Complimentary Medicine
Tropical Diseases
Paramedic and air ambulance attachments

Another aspect of SSCs is an eight-week period of elective study which offers you the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world to gain hands-on experience
