The first National Teacher Training Centre (NTTC) was established in the year 1975 at Jawaharlal Institute Postgraduate Medical Education & Research JIPMER as part of the World Health Organization WHO.

The first National Course on Educational Science for Teachers of Health Professionals was held in March 1976.

The National Courses on Educational Science for Teachers of Health Professionals have been regularly held twice a year during the months of February and September.

The purpose of these National Courses is to empower medical teachers to make medical education skill oriented and need based and also to help in setting up or improving Medical Education Units / Departments in their own institutions.
