National Institute of Mental Health was established in the year 1949. It is located at Bethesda, Maryland, U.S. Depression is a common but serious illness. Everyone occasionally feels blue or sad . Signs and symptoms include: • Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" feelings • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies once pleasurable, including sex • Fatigue and decreased energy • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness • Irritability, restlessness • Difficulty concentrating, remembering details, and making decisions • Insomnia, early-morning wakefulness, or excessive sleeping • Overeating, or appetite loss • Aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not ease even with treatment. • Thoughts of suicide, suicide attempts There are several forms of depressive disorders. Persistent depressive disorder—depressed mood that lasts for at least 2 years. Psychotic depression---when a person has severe depression plus some form of psychosis, such as having disturbing false beliefs or a break with reality (delusions) Postpartum depression,---- It is estimated that 10 to 15 percent of women experience postpartum depression after giving birth. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)--- The depression generally lifts during spring and summer. Antidepressant medication and psychotherapy can reduce SAD symptoms, either alone or in combination with light therapy. Treatments Medication Tricyclics MAOIs Psychotherapy Electroconvulsive therapy and other brain stimulation therapies Tips to help one who is depressed: • Offer emotional support, understanding, patience, and encouragement. • Never dismiss feelings, but point out realities and offer hope. • Talk to him or her, and listen carefully. • Never ignore comments about suicide, and report them to your loved one's therapist or doctor. • Provide assistance in getting to the doctor's appointments. • Remind your loved one that with time and treatment, the depression will lift.
