Nalanda was an acclaimed Mahavihara, a large Buddhist monastery in the ancient kingdom of Magadha (modern-day Bihar) in India Nalanda University is located in Rajgir, near Nalanda, Bihar, India. The University began its first academic session on September 1, 2014 with 15 students including five women. Events Conferences Distinguished Lectures Colloquia Nalanda in History It was a centre of learning from the fifth century CE to c. 1200 CE At its peak, the school attracted scholars and students from near and far with some travelling all the way from Tibet, China, Korea, and Central Asia. Xuanzang in Nalanda In 8th century Dunhuang cave mural depicts Xuanzang returning from India. A page from Xuanzang's Great Tang Records on the Western Regions or "Si-Yu-Ki". Xuanzang (also known as Hiuen Tsang) travelled around India between the years of 630 and 643 CE,[8]:110 and visited Nalanda first in 637 and then again in 642, spending a total of around two years at the monastery Library Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.
