Centre of Excellence for Millets Athiyandal part of TNAU (Tamil Nadu Agricultural University) was set up in 10.10.2013 to evolve high yielding varieties and hybrids in millets and to produce and distribute quality seeds in millets. Millets Importance Millets are rich in protein and quality amino acids. Hence, rich in nutrition. Millets are cultivated in Tamil Nadu under rainfed and irrigated conditions. Millets are drought tolerant and resistant to pests and diseases. Millets have high foliage and hence, used as fodder for cattle. The water requirement of Millets is very low. Hence, the crop attains maturity with very low rainfall. Millets are used to prepare porridge, dosas, extruded products such as semiya, noodles, murukku etc. Hence, value addition of Millets easy and can be done at home itself. Millets are good for diabetic patients. Consumption of ragi strengthens the bones as it is rich in calcium. Millets are rich in fiber and are good for health.
