Tell me the better course among Master of Business Administration MBA and Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)?

Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) or Masters in Business Administration (MBA) are both management courses at Masters level.

Both the courses have a commercial orientation and its difficult to differentiate between the two.

While both the courses have almost similar outcomes in terms of employment prospective, there are some subtle differences.

At the end of PGDM course, candidates are offered a Diploma. However, at the end of an MBA program, candidates receive a degree.

Many students tend to think that a diploma course does not hold the same value as that of a degree. But that is not true. All the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other top B-Schools such as XLRI Jamshedpur and SP Jain Mumbai offer PGDM courses.

Most of these institutes are autonomous bodies (not affiliated to any University) and conducts their own management course.

The government is currently mulling about conferring MBA degrees at IIMs.

In an MBA degree, you will be provided with theoretical knowledge of management concepts and practices. Theoretical knowledge may be useful if you want to get into research. The MBA degree is more academic and theoretical in nature.

The PGDM program, if done from an above average business school, will drill you with efficient training and will give you insights into real life business situations. It is more practical in nature. Since autonomous business schools have freedom to change syllabus, the PGDM program will be structured in a manner most suitable to the real business environment.
