3. Attempt any TWO of the following: 16
a) Draw a neat sketch of turn buckle and write the design
procedure.
b) A mild steel shaft transmits 20 Kw at 200 rpm. It carries a
central load of 900 N and is simply supported on bearings
2.5 metres apart. Determine the size of the shaft, if the
allowable shear stress is 42 MPa and maximum tensile or
compressive stress is not to exceed 56 MPa.
c) The lead screw of a lathe has Acme threads of 50 mm
outside diameter and 8 mm pitch. The screw must exert an
axial pressure of 2500 N in order to drive the tool carriage.
The thrust is carried on a collar 110 mm outside diameter
and 55 mm inside diameter and lead screw rotates at
30 rpm. Determine.
(i) the power required to drive the screw
(ii) efficiency of the lead screw
Assume = 0.15 for screw
= 0.12 for collar
4. Attempt any FOUR of the following: 16
a) What are the advantages of square thread profile? Draw a
thread profile used in power screw.
b) Write lewis equation for the strength of gear tooth. Explain
the meaning of each term.

springs.
d) Give examples where screwed joints are preferred over

5. Attempt any TWO of the following: 16
a) The spindle of a drilling machine as shown in Fig. No. 1
is subjected to a maximum axial load of 10kN during
operation. Determine the diameter of the solid cast iron
column if the permissible tensile stress is 40 N/mm2. The
distance between the axis of the spindle and the axis of the
column is 350 mm.

b) Design a close coiled helical compression spring for a
service load ranging from 2250 N to 2750 N. The axial
deflection of the spring for the load range is 6 mm.
Assume spring index of 5. The permissible shear
stress intensity is 420 MPa and modulus of rigidity
G=84 kN/mm2. Neglect effect of stress concentration.
c) A cylinder head of steam engine is held in position by
M20 bolts. The effective diameter of the cylinder is
350 mm and steam pressure is 0.75 N/mm2. If bolts are
not initially stressed find the number of bolts required.
Take working stress for the bolt material is 20N/mm2.
6. Attempt any FOUR of the following: 16
a) State the following material specifications
(i) FeE 230
(ii) FG 200
(iii) 35C8
(iv) X 20 Cr18 Ni2
b) Explain with neat sketch, what are the modes of failure in
the kunckle pin?
c) Explain with neat sketch constructional details of leaf
spring. State any two applications.

d) A plate 75 mm wide and 12.5 mm thick is joined with
another plate by a single transverse, double parallel fillet
weld. The maximum tensile and shear stress are 70N/mm2
and 56 N/mm2 respectively. Find the length of each parallel
fillet weld if joint is subjected to 90 kN.
e) For a square key equally strong in shearing and crushing
show that permissible crushing stress is twice the shear
stress.
