The Department of Legal Studies is a heritage Department of the University of Madras was established in the year 1951.

The epartment at Madras University was started M.L. Degree in International Law & Constitutional Law, the first of its kind in India.

Two M.L.Courses are offered under CBCS pattern viz:

International Law and Organisation
Constitutional Law and Legal Order

Eligibility:
A candidate who has passed in 3 year B.L/L.L.B., or 5 year B.L / L.L.B. from a Recognized University under regular pattern of study i.e (10+2+3+3) or (11+1+3+3) or (10+2+5)

English Medium only in the Department of Legal Studies:

Br-I - International Law and Constitutional Law
Br-III - Criminal Law
Br-V - Intellectual Property Law
Br-VI - Human Rights and Environmental Law
Br-VII - Labour and Administrative Law

The Madras University is provides admission form for ML Private Study course. The Department of Legal Studies, a heritage Department of the University of Madras was established in the year 1951.

The Department has since its inception been a centre for excellence for advance studies in International Law and Constitutional Law.

At present apart from Ph.Dprogramme, two M.L.Courses are offered under CBCS pattern viz.
International Law and Organisation
Constitutional Law and Legal Order

Seven branches of ML viz International Law & Constitutional Law, Business Law, Criminal Law, Property Law, Intellectual Property Law, Human Rights & Environmental Law and Labour & Administrative Law are also offered by the Department under Private Study Scheme.

The University is offering M.L. degree course in the following branches under private study (Non-semester) through English Medium only in the Department of Legal Studies.
