Kuumba Lynx is an Arts Education & Youth Development Organization. It was established in 1996 by three women, J. Villegas, L. Garcia, & J. Bullie.

KL has a mission of working to provide access to programs that preserve, promote and present urban arts & culture.

KL is dedicated to providing programs for creative expression & literacy for Chicago youth and their families

Hip Hop Arts Programming Continuum-

The Kuumba Lynx Hip Hop Arts programs serve both high school and elementary students through a continuum model of sequential learning that include

1) Structured arts residencies, workshops and apprenticeship programs mainly in schools

2) Monthly and annual community arts and cultural events

3) Local and national performances presented by the Kuumba Lynx Touring Performance Ensemble (KLPE)

KL programs primarily engage marginalized youth of color and underserved communities that experience challenges such as

Gang involvement
Criminalization
Pushed out/failing out of traditional public schools
Displacement as a result of gentrification
Homelessness
Teen pregnancy
Youth parenting
Unemployment

While their programs are citywide, they focus in Uptown, Little Village, Englewood, Humboldt Park, North Lawndale and Bronzville, some of the most economically and socially challenged communities in Chicago.

Their youth are 55% African American, 30% Latino, 5% Native, 5% White 5%, and 5% other.

Approximately 90% of the KL constituents receive free or reduced CPS lunch.

Their participants are generally 10 to18 years old (80%), but they also serve 19 to 24 year olds (20%).
