The Department of Microbiology, King George's Medical University was established as an independent department in the year 1987 The department has contributed immensely to the teaching/training, patient care services and research in Microbiology. Currently the department handles nearly 40,000 specimens annually for various diagnostic tests. The Department runs a MD programme (3 years course, MCI recognized) and also gets students registered in the University for PhD and MD-PhD courses. Academics- Undergraduate Teaching: MBBS Students are in the department for 3 semesters of 18 weeks each (teaching duration). Total teaching hours are 270 (more than the minimum hours recommended by MCI) Teaching is done through lectures, demonstrations, Tutorials and Hands on practical. Lectures are taken using multimedia and overhead projectors. There are dedicated rooms for tutorials. Teaching Hours Distribution Semester wise Credit hours for entire course Theory- 1-2 hrs/wk Each semester Theory- 4.5 Practical - 2 hrs/wk Theory - 27 hrs Practical- 3 Tutorial 1-2 hr/week Practical - 36 hrs Tutorial-4.5 Total (54 wk)- 270 hrs Tutorial- 27 hrs Total: 12 90 hrs/semester Postgraduate Teaching: MD Microbiology started in the year 1987. It is recognized by MCI. Currently 6 students are taken for MD every year. They are posted in various laboratories by rotation. More than 70 MD students have passed so far and are well placed in various Academic Institutes or private practice.
