JHU Retaking Courses details:

Effective fall 2011, the academic policy for retaking a course has changed.

The new policy is as follows:

Any student may retake a course to pardon a grade of C+ or less.
The grade for the second challenge and the linked credits are recorded on the record and are intended in the GPA.

Original grade leftovers on the record along with the notation “R” to indicate the course was retaken.

Such R grades do not affect grade point calculations;
They do not carry credit toward graduation. Only the grade in the retaken course accrues credit and applies to the GPA, even when the retaken grade is lower than the original grade.

A student may retake a course only one time. Taking the same course a third time or retaking another course requires permission of the student’s academic advising office.
