Jawaharlal Nehru University was established in 1969 by an act of parliament. JNU was awarded the "Visitor's Award" for "Best University" in 2017 by the President of India. It was ranked sixth overall in the National Institutional Ranking Framework ranking of 2018 and second among universities.
