About

Department of Agriculture has taken up a scheme to promote jatropha (Bhot Era) cultivation in Assam for production of bio-diesel.

Total 137.4 ha of land will be enclosed under this crop, in the districts of Barpeta, Kokrajhar, Kamrup, Darrang, Sonitpur, Nagaon, Marigaon, Karimganj and Hailakandi.

Twenty-six training sessions will be conducted to encourage the farmers.

The cultivation will be done in waste land of the State.

Advantages of Jatropha Cultivation:-

The following are some of the Jatropha plantation advantages.

Jatropha crop may be grown in wide choice of soil including wastelands, poor soils, low rainfall and drought areas.

Jatropha plants are resilient and can tolerate water scarcity.

Waste lands and other lands not suitable fro crops can be utilized for growing Jatropha seeds.

Jatropha cultivation boosts rural economy by providing local employment.

Jatropha plantation prevents soil erosion.

Jatropha crop will not fight with any other crop and supplements the profits.

Wasteland soil fertility may be enlarged through Jatropha plantation.

A Jatropha plant possesses medicinal as well as other industrial uses.

Jatropha plants will generate returns for 30 years.

On an average one may get 10 to 15,000 Rupees per 1 acre plantation from 4th year.
