The objective of Mukteswar Campus in Uttarakhand of ICAR-Indian Veterinary Research Institute is research on animal viruses and viral diseases of livestock and poultry; preparation and production of antigens, diagnostic sera, vaccines, nucleic acid probe/s, etc.; epi-zootiological and pathological studies on viral diseases; monitoring, surveillance and diagnosis of economically important diseases in India. It also aims at research on various health aspects of animals of temperate region; study the physiology of animals of temperate region and also to study the nutritional requirement for optimum health and production; study the reproductive behaviour of animals of temperate region Conserve genetic resources/ germplasm of animals and to improve their genetic potential; postgraduate teaching, research and training and extension activities. Services Offered Diagnostic and prophylactic services for PPR, sheep pox, goat pox, buffalo pox, camel pox and Orf Diagnostic services for bluetongue and classical swine fever Referral Services Post- graduate education & training Human Resource Development Planning & Policies Disease diagnosis and treatment of livestock diseases in and around Mukteswar Consultancy to livestock owners on livestock rearing practices in temperate climatic conditions. Extension activities of the campus include: Organization of animal health camps and kishan gosthies Knowledge dissemination in farmers through radio talk Linkage development with Non Government organizations working in this area for restoring animal health and production Major Activities Production and supply of diagnostic kits for diagnosis and sero-surveillance of PPR Production and supply of PPR vaccine for field use Development of thermostable, deuterated and combined (PPR and Goat pox) vaccines for PPR Molecular epidemiology of peste des petits ruminant virus, poxviruses and bluetongue virus Development of SYBR Green and TaqMan based real time PCR and multiplex PCR for rapid and specific diagnosis of PPR Molecular pathogenesis of PPR virus: (i) SLAM characterization, (ii) cytokine profiling and (iii) virus tropism Development of DIVA strategy for differentiation of PPR infection from vaccination Development of live attenuated vaccines for goat pox, sheep pox, camel pox, buffalo pox and Orf Development of combined vaccines (i) goat pox and PPR, (ii) sheep pox and PPR and, (iii) goat pox, Orf and PPR Evaluation of goat pox, sheep pox, Orf, buffalo pox and camel pox live attenuated vaccines in terms of (i) thermo-stability, (ii) TaqMan real time PCR based potency estimation, (iii) large-scale field trials, (iv) long-term potency trials for sheep pox and goat pox vaccines and (v) comparative evaluation of sheep pox vaccines Development of TaqMan real time PCR for rapid and specific diagnosis of sheep pox, goat pox, Orf, buffalo pox and camel pox Detection and differentiation of sheep pox, goat pox and Orf by multiplex PCR Taxonomy capacity building of animal poxviruses Characterization of “Toll-like Receptors (TLRs)” in farm animals: Evolutionary lineages and application in diseases resistance Prevalence, characterization and development of diagnostics for animal rotaviruses Production and supply of recombinant VP7 protein based indirect ELISA for serosurveillance of bluetongue in the country and development of PAb based sandwich ELISA for bluetongue virus detection from clinical samples Maintenance of repositories (virus, serum, virus isolates) of Rinderpest (only vaccine strain), PPR, pox (sheep pox, goat pox, buffalo pox, camel pox and orf), bluetongue and classical swine fever (CSF) Providing diagnostic services for selected animal viral diseases viz. PPR, pox and bluetongue Postgraduate teaching in Veterinary Virology Extension activities: (i) Diagnostic (ii) Prophylactic (iii) Therapeutic services Animal production and health management of different experimental livestock species and laboratory animals Technology dissemination, inter-linkages with the user agencies and farmers in the region Diagnosis and treatment facilities to livestock reared in and around Mukteswar and consultancy to farmers including distribution of lab to land literature in vernacular Monitoring of service projects: Maintenance and enhancement of animal productivity Disease diagnosis, treatment and maintenance of health of animals Breeding of laboratory animals and maintenance of equines Explorative investigations into livestock feeding problems at high altitude Himalayan region and study on strategic manipulation for increased production Analysis of milk components in cattle and buffaloes in Uttarakhand Study on nutritional physiology of local hill cattle of Kumaon region vis-à-vis crossbred cattle.
