Re: IPS Exam Required Minimum Qualifications

Indian Police Service (IPS) is among the three All India Service of the
Government of India.

IPS officers are employed from the state police cadres and from the rigorous
Civil Services Examination organized by UPSC every year.

Due to an on-going shortage of police officers in India, the Ministry of Home
Affairs proposed the formation of an Indian Police Service Limited
Competitive Examination to be organized by UPSC.

The Civil Services Examination has a 3-stage competitive selection process.

At stage 1, there is an objective type examination called the preliminary
exam.

This is a qualifying examination.

It consists of a General Studies paper and an aptitude test.

Only the applicants who pass this can appear for the "Main Examination"
which consists of 9 papers.

Each contender has to qualify a 2 languages paper and 4 general studies
papers select an optional subject (2 papers).

This is followed by an interview.

Academic Eligibility Details:

The contender must hold a degree of any of recognized Universities or
have an equal qualification

Contenders who have appeared or aim to appear for the qualifying
examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear for the
Preliminary Examination

The UPSC may in exceptional cases treat a contender without the
foregoing requisite qualification as an eligible candidate if he / she has
passed an examination organized by other institutions, the standard of which
justifies his / her admission in the opinion of the Commission.

Applicants with professional and technical qualifications recognised by the
Government as corresponding to professional and technical degrees

Applicants who have passed the final year of MBBS or any Medical
Examination but are yet to complete the internship can also appear for the
Main Examination.
