Can you tell me if Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi is approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) or not?

Re: Indira Gandhi National Open University AICTE Approved

The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), established by an Act of Parliament in 1985, has striven to build an inclusive knowledge society through inclusive education. It has tried to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) by offering high-quality teaching through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode.

It operates through a network of 56 Regional Centres (RC), 11 Recognized Regional Centres (RRC) (i.e., 6, IGNOU-Army RRC, 4, IGNOU-Navy RRC 1, IGNOU-Assam Rifles RRC) and nearly 2000 Learner Support Centres across India. The vast network of RCs and LSCs extends the outreach of IGNOU to the hitherto deprived rural, remote, socially and physically lacking segments of population, providing access to quality and cost-effective higher education in flexible manner.

Accreditation & Recognition

IGNOU has been granted the authority to confer degrees by Clause 5(1)(iii) of the IGNOU Act 1985. It is also recognised as a Central University by the University Grants Commission of India (UGC). The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) recognises it conferred degrees as on par with the degrees conferred by its members and the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recognises the Master of Computer Applications and Master of Business Administration program of IGNOU.

In 1993, it was designated by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) as its first Centre of Excellence for Distance Education empowered "to actively participate in Commonwealth co-operative endeavours to identify, nurture, and strengthen open learning institutions throughout the Commonwealth, particularly in the Third World.

It also accredits Open University and distance education systems in India through the Distance Education Council (DEC). Authority to do so is granted under Clause 16 and Statute 28 of the IGNOU Act 1985.
