With the recommendation of WHO, the Regional Station of IVRI at Kolkata was established in 1970 as a joint venture between IVRI (ICAR) and All India Institute of Hygiene & Public Health (GOI) to train specialists in veterinary public health, leading to the degree of MVPH of University of Calcutta.

Eastern Regional Station Kolkata

Objectives
To carry out basic and applied research on animal diseases with special emphasis on zoonoses in Eastern and North-Eastern Region.
To undertake organized epidemiological investigation of animal diseases and provide referral diagnostic facilities for animal diseases.
To convey post graduate education and specialized training courses for human resource development
To enable transfer of technologies for all round development of animal resources in the region.

Major Activities
The Station is engaged in basic and applied research on various animal diseases prevalent in the region with a regional perspective.
The Station also undertakes systematic epidemiological survey and research on zoonotic and other animal diseases of importance in the region.
The scientists of the Station are making concerted efforts on development of improved diagnostics and disease monitoring system, undertaking specialized training courses in the areas of frontier technologies and transfer of technologies for the all-round development of animal resources.
