The Indian Maritime University (IMU) is a Central University, that was established by an Act of the Indian Parliament namely the Indian Maritime University Act 2008, on 14 November 2008. It is the only university in the country imparting education in the maritime field.

The following existing seven government maritime Training and Research Institutes were merged with IMU:

-Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Kolkata
-Marine Engineering and Research Institute, Mumbai
-Lal Bahadur Shastri College of Advanced Maritime Studies and Research, Mumbai
-T.S. Chanakya, Mumbai
-National Maritime Academy, Chennai
-Indian Institute of Port Management, Kolkata
-Indian Maritime University - Visakhapatnam Campus, (National Ship Design and Research Center)
The Marine Engineering and Research Institute (MERI), formerly known as the Directorate of Marine Engineering Training (DMET), is India's national institute for the training of marine engineers.
